He is credited with inventing an early calculator, amazingly advanced for its time, called the Pascaline. Étienne Pascal (1588–1651) was a local magistrate and tax collector at Clermont, and himself of some scientific reputation, a member of the aristocratic and professional class in France known as noblesse de robe. Blaises sister Gilberte (b. 1620) was his first biographer; his younger sister Jacqueline (b. 1625) earned acclaim as a poet and dramatist before becoming a nun. Antoinette died when Blaise was 5. Étienne moved the family to Paris in 1631, partly to prosecute his own scientific studies and partly to carry on the education of his only son, who had already displayed exceptional ability. Blaise Pascal was kept at home in order to ensure he was not being overworked, and his father directed that his education should be at first confined to the study of languages. He requested that mathematics not be introduced until his son was 15. This naturally excited the boys curiosity, and one day, being then 12 years old, he asked what geometry was. His tutor replied that it was the science of constructing exact figures and of determining the proportions between their different parts. Blaise Pascal, stimulated no doubt by the injunction against reading it, gave up his play-time to this new study, and in a few weeks had discovered for himself many properties of figures, and in particular the proposition that the sum of the angles of a triangle is equal to two right angles. In response, his father brought him a copy of Euclid. A genius from a young age, Blaise Pascal composed a treatise on the communication of sounds at the age of 12, and at the age of 16 he composed a treatise on conic sections. A Life of Science At the age of 14, Blaise Pascal was admitted to the weekly meetings of Roberval, Mersenne, Mydorge, and other French geometricians, from which, ultimately, the French Academy sprung. In 1641, at the age of 18, Pascal built his first arithmetical machine, an instrument which, eight years later, he further improved and called the Pascaline. His correspondence with Fermat about this time shows that he was then turning his attention to analytical geometry and physics. He repeated Torricellis experiments, by which the pressure of the atmosphere could be estimated as a weight, and he confirmed his theory of the cause of barometrical variations by obtaining at the same instant readings at different altitudes on the hill of Puy-de-Dà ´me. The Pascaline The idea of using machines to solve mathematical problems can be traced at least as far back as the early  17th century. Mathematicians who designed and implemented calculators that were capable of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division included Wilhelm Schickhard, Blaise Pascal, and Gottfried Leibniz. Pascal invented his numerical wheel calculator called the  Pascaline  to help his father, by then a French tax collector, count taxes. The Pascaline had eight movable dials that added up to eight figured long sums and used base ten. When the first dial (ones column) moved 10 notches, the second dial moved one notch to represent the tens column reading of 10. When the second dial moved 10 notches, the third dial (hundreds column) moved one notch to represent one hundred, and so on. Blaise Pascals Other Inventions Roulette Machine Blaise Pascal introduced a very primitive version of the roulette machine in the 17th century. The roulette was a by-product of Blaise Pascals attempts to invent  a  perpetual motion machine. Wrist Watch The first reported person to actually wear a  watch  on the wrist was Blaise Pascal. Using a piece of string, he attached his pocket watch to his wrist. Religious Studies In 1650 while he was in the midst of this  research, Blaise Pascal suddenly abandoned his favorite pursuits to study religion, or, as he says in his Pensà ©es, contemplate the greatness and the misery of man. At about the same time, he persuaded the younger of his two sisters to enter the Benedictine abbey of Port-Royal. In 1653, Blaise Pascal had to administer his fathers estate. He took up his old life again and conducted several experiments on the pressure exerted by gases and liquids. It was also about this period that he invented the arithmetical triangle, and together with Fermat he created the calculus of probabilities. He was meditating marriage when an accident again turned his thoughts to religious life. He was driving a four-in-hand carriage on November 23, 1654, when the horses ran away. The two leaders dashed over the parapet of the bridge at Neuilly, and Blaise Pascal was saved only by the traces breaking. Death Always somewhat of a mystic, Pascal considered this a special summons to abandon the world. He wrote an account of the accident on a small piece of parchment, which for the rest of his life he wore next to his heart to perpetually remind him of his covenant. He moved to Port-Royal shortly after, where he continued to live until his death in Paris on August 19, 1662. Constitutionally delicate, Pascal had injured his health by his incessant study; from the age of 17 or 18 he suffered from insomnia and acute dyspepsia, and at the time of his death he was physically worn out. He neither married nor had children, and at the end of his life he became an ascetic. Modern scholars have attributed his illness to a variety of possible ailments, including gastrointestinal tuberculosis, nephritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and/or irritable bowel syndrome. Legacy Blaise Pascals contribution to computing was recognized by computer scientist Nicklaus Wirth, who in 1972 named his new computer language Pascal (and insisted that it be spelled Pascal, not PASCAL). The Pascal (Pa) is a unit of atmospheric pressure named in honor of Blaise Pascal, whose experiments greatly increased knowledge of the atmosphere. Evaluating the Success of the Enforcement of Prohibition in the United States Prohibition was the banning of alcohol in the U.S.A. It was the 18th amendment and was known as the national prohibition act. It was also given the name the Volstead act because it was put into practice by Andrew.J.Volstead. Prohibition had its ups and downs. It was successful in many ways but was also a failure according to other matters. One of the reasons due to which prohibition failed was because of the size of America. It was a vast amount of land therefore made it difficult to patrol. It had a large population which gave another reason for difficulty in patrolling. They wanted to enforce prohibition because America was all well at the time and they didnt want any risks of this to be spoilt. They felt alcohol was a cause for statistics and risks rising. They felt prohibition was needed in order for safety. This was a short term cause because it was the conditions during the roaring twenties alone. This was a good idea but wasnt successful because of the other failures. The government started to see that quantities of liquor were being smuggled into their country and so they decided on bringing in fines. If you were caught with illegal liquor you would be fined. If you could not pay off this fine then you would be taken to court. After you r case if you still couldnt pay off this fine you would be excused this maybe because you are unable to afford this. This did have a slight effect but wasnt a major reason of succession as it did fail in some ways. This was also a short term cause as they were only fined for illegal liquor and so when they out the 21st amendment into practice this fine would no longer be needed. Mental disorders are a result of different problems associated with the brain, and each problem has various symptoms. These disorders of the brain are normally characterized by different factors that are combined, such as emotions, relationships, behavior and abnormal thoughts. There are many reasons why mental disorders affect people, including family history and genes, life pressures and habits. Other factors like a history of drug abuse, stress, biology, a traumatic brain injury, exposure to toxic chemicals while pregnant, and even cancer may lead to mental disorders. Bipolar disorder is a medical condition that affects the brain, making it a mental illness. It is also called manic depression, which explains why individuals with bipolar disorder are said to experience manic episodes. Such manic episodes cause strange changes in mood and vitality and affect the ability of individuals to carry out their activities of daily living (ADLs). Symptoms of this disorder can result in a high level of disruption in the way individuals interact with other people, diminishing their productivity in school or work, sometimes even extending to extreme cases that can lead to suicide. The ICD 10 (international coding of disease) for bipolar coding is F31.9 (Godwin, 2010). The etiology of the bipolar disorder is idiopathic, though it results that the genetic composition and environmental components play a significant role as causal factors of this mental illness. Environmental elements can contribute to this disorder, especially if an individual has a history of childhood mistreatment, which can cause long-term stress from strongly negative or painful early childhood experiences. The Morality of Zoos Free Essays

The word zoo is a fairly broad term. Zoos are most commonly thought of as an attraction rather than a means for education. More importantly, they are rarely associated with the survival of the human race. This research can be beneficial and life saving for humans and if it were not for this testing, we would not have many key vaccines that we have today. For the sake of this paper the term zoo can be applied to all animals in captivity. This includes those for entertainment, medical testing, and rehabilitation/protection. Tom Reagan wrote on if zoos are morally defensible, but included all of the previously listed forms of captivity under the title of â€Å"zoo†. He argues that zoos are immoral because of rights based principles; however, he fails to see the implications of assuming that animals have equal rights to humans. Although his conclusion is false, it is morally wrong and unnecessary to keep an animal in captivity purely for public amusement and financial gain. Reagan presents two views in proving the immorality of zoos. First is the utilitarian standpoint which claims that the suffering of animals being in captivity far outweighs the suffering of humans had the animals not been in captivity. The second view is the rights based principle, which is that animals have rights and should not be in captivity. He sides with the latter of the two theories, deciding that the utilitarian view fails to asses all of the components of human suffering without zoos. He claims that animals morally have rights to freedom and respect thus making it immoral for humans to take this away from them. The real hitch in his theory though, is how he proposes the moral rights of animals. He claims that they have rights because of their awareness to their existence and therefore knowledge of suffering and pleasure. However, although animals are aware, they are not conscious of cause and effect. They don’t see the morality behind suffering, they just instinctually avoid it. To ascertain that they have the same rationalization powers as humans do on deciding if their actions are causing pleasure or pain, is to give their awareness too much credit. A good paper to prove this point, is Carl Cohen’s Do Animals Have Rights? In it he responds to Regan’s theory that animals have rights. Cohen decides that Regan’s biggest error is associating two different versions of the broadly used term â€Å"inherent value† to formulate his conclusion. Regan claims that because animals have inherent value they are moral agents and should not be used in a fashion that makes them less important than humans. However, Cohen says that just because they have inherent value it does not mean they are moral beings. Surely because they feel pain it is immoral to cause them to suffer needlessly but this does not give them the same rights as humans. Animals live in an amoral world without respect or knowledge of other living thing’s rights. Since they are unaware of morals and rights, it seems absurd to hold them to the same moral standard as humans. It would appear then that when deciding on the moral legitimacy of zoos, it would be correct to separate human rights from the natural laws that animals live by. The natural world is based on survival. Animals kill other animals to survive and out of instinct. House cats torture their prey before killing it, and bears eat their prey alive. Animals act without the knowledge of other living beings having a right to life because it is not a matter of rationalization for them. They do not see the suffering of other animals as a moral issue because they are incapable of grasping such a concept. Because we as humans do have the ability to rationalize we also have the responsibility to avoid causing harm and suffering to other living things. However, humans need to survive too, and if it means keeping animals for medical testing then this should not be looked at any differently than a wolf attacking a human so as to not starve. Animals already use other animals as tools for survival; and if this is the case as it is in medical testing, then captivity should be allowed. Same goes for animal rehabilitation and protection from extinction. Although wildlife preserves are more ideal for most animals in this case, even a small enclosure zoo could be in that particular animal’s best interest concerning its health. Small enclosures and preserves can also give humans lots on insight into the daily routines of animals so as to better protect them from extinction. What is inhumane and immoral however, is using zoos for monetary gain and personal entertainment. Through evolution some animals have become accustomed to human interaction and unnatural surroundings. Those that are not, however, should not be put in captivity for no reason. Launching new products variation: the company can also switch to the new and the demanding product. This will help the company to enter the new industry which has better potential to keep up the business (Kiss and Barr, 2017). Merger: merger is also a very good option for the company. It has been recommended that if it cannot be possible for the firm to enter the new market, it has the opportunity to merge with the company already having the overseas activities (Cartwright and Cooper, 2014). This helps the firm to enter the new market without facing any issues or barriers of internationalisation. Goal setting theory It is proposed by Edwin Locke that setting some precise goal for the individual will improve their performance. If the individual is given some goal in that case the individual feels that it is a challenge for them and as it is a fact that all challenges drive people. So in this case the individual will take the goal as a challenge and will try to achieve that challenge. In this situation the performance will increase. The individual will feel that urge to achieve the goal that is being set in front of them. The goals should not be easy but they should be achievable. Easy goals which can be achieved easily will not improve the performance of the individual (Jiang et al., 2012). The goal should be achievable otherwise it will act in opposite to the situation and thereby will de-motivate the individual and the result of this will be that the individual will stop performing as being sure that they wont be able to achieve the goal. The individual should be rewarded with something upon achievement of the goal as it is the common human behavior that human beings want return of their hardship. So is a person does not get any return or any reward of their hard work in that case the person will not get motivated to do the particular work. According to Pavlov it tells that this theory tells us about the factors that control the human behavior. In other words the more the management will be fair the more the individual will get motivated (Khan, 2012). The motivation of an individual comes from their perceived equity and the amount of fairness that is being show from the side of the management. If the management does not prove to be fair, in that case in such a situation the individual will get de motivated and will not like to give their full effort in doing the work. So the management should be totally fair to help the individual to perform better, so that the individual gives full effort so that the particular job can be achieved. The more the fairness that is being perceived by the individual the better the individua l will perform. As the individual will perceive more equity and more fairness in that case the particular individual will get more motivated and will stay motivated to perform their task with greater effort.
